Here's the GCM Super Class Crawler Project Page.
Off-roading is the strong point of the E-savage world, and we have enjoyed taking this to the extreme with the E-Sav based Rock Crawler we have called Rock Savvy.
Our truck uses the arms, knuckles, diff cases and ring and pinions from a stock E-Savage and adds a custom machined spool, arm lockouts, and steering servo mount. The stock diff cases have conveniently located holes in the top above the pinion bearings that were just right for mounting the upper links of the 4-link suspension system.
We have used the diff and gears from an Evader to make the gearing low and the ratios adjustable with ease. Our latest gears are a 12-90 combo using a LHS 12 tooth 48 pitch pinion and a HPI 6990 Carbon Fiber spur gear and a Johnson Electric DCM-266 which in combination makes for VERY slow, VERY low gearing. It is easy to walk beside this truck at full throttle. We find this gives nice smooth control on slopes and sidehills and with the RDLogics tires now, we have a strong grippy setup.
The current configuration is a big improvement in the center of gravity. We got rid of the 4 channel radio and the MCR ESC-Reciever and reverse switch in favor of a simple TQ3 Modded radio and reciever and a trusty XL-5 ESC. This change has saved 120 grams all above the top of the rims! We also changed the battery supply, removing the 6 pack above the front diff for a custom matched pack using 4 in front of the diff and 2 over. This lowered the battery weight by a half inch! The truck is comfortable laying on the side of the wheels with no notion of flipping over.
Here are some pictures of the Rock Savvy setup as it was in 2007. Note in a couple of the pictures that the articulation allows the truck to stand on top of '4' stock E-Savage tires with the other 3 on the ground: great for the creek run in the country.
Here are some pictures of the Rock Savvy changes from the stock E-Savage stuff.
